Mobile Journalism MOOC

Sign-up for a free 20 week MOOC on Mobile Journalism starting on 23 January!

Are you interested in mobile and citizen journalism? Do you have a need to improve your skills in producing news items and reports on your mobile phone based on what is happening in your community? Would you like to know more about what it is to be a journalist reporting on issues and concerns that are important to you and your peers?

If your answer to any of these questions is ‘yes’ – then check out the brand new Y-NEX MOOC on Mobile Journalism (MoJo) beginning on 23 January. This 20 week MOOC is made up of six modules:

Media Literacy and Human Rights
Mobile Journalism Technology
Mobile Journalism Storytelling
Mobile Journalism Production
Intellectual Property Rights
Digital Entrepreneurship.

Each module represents a 16-20 hour learner workload. During this MOOC you will learn about the basic tools and skills that a mobile journalist needs to create engaging reports using video, audio and photos. You will explore the notion of media literacy and what it means to be literate in our fast-paced media-saturated world. You will learn about story-telling and what it takes to create successful reports as well as what you need to take into account when it comes to ethical issues and intellectual property rights. You will also learn about successful project development, finding ways to put your new skills into practice and exploring how you can earn an income as a mobile journalist.

This MOOC is aimed at youth workers and staff who work in organisations concerned with youth empowerment. It is also aimed at high-school pupils, students, trainees, volunteers and unemployed young people who are interested in becoming mobile journalists. No previous knowledge is required, just an interest in communication through mobile journalism.

Individual Y-NEX badges will be awarded for each module to everyone who completes all related assignments. On top of this, everyone who successfully earns all 6 badges will be awarded with a certificate of completion. Furthermore, all active participants will have a chance to win a trip to Zagreb to take part in a week long master class organised in collaboration with Y-NEX partner HRT, the Croatian National Public Service Radio and TV station.

This MOOC is organised by the Y-NEX partnership. Y-NEX is a European project supported under the Erasmus+ programme and is all about giving young people a voice through mobile journalism (MoJo) to help them participate more fully in society. By building up their skills in using simple commonplace devices to create and publish news stories, Y-NEX aims to empower young people to become more active citizens, reporting on issues and topics of concern in their daily lives and the communities in which they live.
